MUSIC CREDITS FOR PRIVATE STUDY
Question: Can a student earn high school credits for private music lessons?
Answer: Yes, in some cases.
Here is what the Alberta Education Guide to Education says about this:
When a student requests music credits for private study, in voice or an instrument, a principal may grant
5 credits for each of:
• Choral Music 10, 20 and/or 30 for voice
• Instrumental Music 10, 20 and/or 30 for an instrument
Students are not to receive credits for both school music and music by private study when those
programs are both instrumental or both choral (voice).
Fifteen credits is the maximum credits a student can earn in either a Choral Music 10–20–30 program or an Instrumental Music 10–20–30 program. For example, a student cannot earn 15 credits in instrumental school music and another 15 credits in instrumental private study. (taken from Guide to Education.)

Question: How do I know what credits I can earn for my private music lessons?
Answer: In order to be awarded credits, you must complete music and theory exams with either Conservatory Canada or the Royal Conservatory of Music. You will be awarded high school credits based on the chart shown at the bottom of this page. You will earn 5 credits for each level you complete.
Question: What do I need to do after I complete my practical and theory exams?
Answer: You must submit an official transcript from either Conservatory Canada or the Royal Conservatory of Music to your school counsellor. The counsellor will then complete the paperwork to award the high school credits.
